2019 Color of the year

It is that time again! All the major paint companies are releasing their choices for 2019’s color of the year. As always, it is such a fun guessing game for us in the paint industry. Will it be another dark, rich color like last year? Will it be something modern or classic?

Without fail, we always end up surprised by some of the choices and this year is no exception!

PPG chose a shade of paint that hints more towards the outdoors and nature. Perhaps companies are starting to pick up on people’s desire to be in a calm and relaxing environment? For PPG, their pick is ‘Night Watch,’ a dark evergreen color. We think this color would be great in a study or as an accent wall in a main living area.

Breaking out from the more nature centric paint colors, is Sherwin Williams. They chose a semi controversial warm color, ‘Cavern Clay.’ The rich orange color is a nod to the Southwest as it reminds people of terracotta. Sue Wadden, director of color marketing, describes the color by saying it “embodies renewal, simplicity and free-spirited, bohemian flair.”

We think Sherwin-Williams envisions this color paired with leather furniture and natural wood décor.

Benjamin Moore

Now Benjamin Moore chose a color we can get behind: a cool neutral gray. ‘Metropolitan’ is a shade from their Color Trends palette, that is already very popular in many homes. Ellen O’Neill, director of Strategic Design Intelligence says it is a color that is “not arresting nor aggressive, this understated yet glamorous gray creates a soothing, impactful common ground.”

Pantone Color Institute

As always, Pantone tends to choose a palette of colors each year that they think will be the trending colors. This year they have selected 8 palettes, with 72 total colors. One palette is called ‘Cravings’ and as you might guess, is inspired by rich foods. Of their 2019 choices, Pantone says “PANTONEVIEW home 2019 focuses on the colors that are next: the colors we will crave, the colors we will demand, the colors that will engage our imagination and appeal to our emotions.”

At Color Expressions Painting, we love seeing all of the choices for trending colors and then incorporating them into our projects. Call us today if you want to update your paint and are just as intrigued by the 2019 colors as we are!
