Exterior Wood Rot Replacement

Exterior Wood Rot Replacement

In our last blog post, we talked about two really unique ways to upgrade the exterior of your home: cedar siding and redwood siding. While we love the idea of adding a natural element (like wood) to your living space, there are some things that tend to come up with using a natural siding. One of them is wood rot.

At Color Expressions Painting, we think using wood for windows or siding is an amazing statement and one that we will continue to stand by. It is just important to stay on top of maintenance and make sure to catch any rot before it gets really bad.

There are a lot of historic neighborhoods in Northern VA with homes that have wood features or siding. Make sure you are keeping these homes maintained, by watching out for and fixing any signs of wood rot.

Establishing Rot

Before you start repairing wood rot, it is important to establish that you do in fact have an issue. Here are some of the telltale signs that your home has rotting wood.

  • White or grey growths visible on the wood
  • Mushroom like growths on the wood
  • Peeling paint
  • Green algae on the wood
  • Areas of wood that appear darker than other areas

An easy test is to push something like a screwdriver into the suspected rot – if the wood doesn’t resist, you most likely have rot.

Finding the Source

The first step in repairing or replacing rotting wood is figuring out what the source of the issue is. There is no point in making a fix if the problem will continue to persist.

Most times, the damage will be due to a moisture buildup that allows the wood to get weak. There are two main ways that moisture buildup happens:

  • Lack of paint, stain, or sealer
  • Water damage (clogged gutters or downspouts, no gutters or downspouts)

Making Repairs

Once the source is identified, it can be fixed and the wood can be repaired. Clogged or old gutters are easy to clean or update. Additionally, repainting or staining is another easy task.

While small amounts of wood rot can be repaired, it is oftentimes easier and more cost effective to just replace the entire piece of wood. This ensures that the rot does not continue to spread.

It can be really hard to replace rotted wood pieces without damaging the perfectly good wood, so we recommend you leave this up to the professionals.

As a part of the repair, we will encourage you too stain or seal the wood. This just adds to the protection and prevents this type of issue from happening again.

Having wood on your home is a wonderful accent or main feature, but it can be prone to water damage. Call Color Expressions Painting today to talk about ways to fix your rotted wood!
