Replacing Wood Rot

Replacing Wood Rot

In our last blog post [https://www.colorexpressionspainting.com/do-i-have-wood-rot/], we talked about how you figure out if you have wood rot.

For a quick recap, there are several visible signs (discoloration, algae, peeling paint) as well as actual physical weakness in the wood. If you can reach it, try pushing on it with a hard object like a screwdriver. If the wood doesn’t resist, you have wood rot!

Now it is time to go over what we do when you have wood rot. Unfortunately, it is not something that you can easily fix when it exists. For example, you can’t just seal all the wood and expect that the wood rot won’t get worse in the future. At the time where you discover wood rot, you will have to take more drastic measures to fix it.

At Color Expressions Painting, we always recommend replacing your existing wood feature (siding, deck, shutters) with composite materials. While wood features, especially a natural cedar siding, can look really stunning, they are a lot of maintenance and when not cared for properly, are prone to issues like wood rot.

We really like fiber cement siding as an affordable and reliable option. Made up of cellulose fibers, cement, and sand, fiber cement siding holds up really well to various kinds of weather and those pesky insects. Another solid siding option is oriented strand board which is made primarily of sawdust. Oriented strand board looks more like wood and is also more susceptible to weather and insects.

If you don’t think you’ll keep up with maintenance, which is fine, fiber cement siding is a better option.

There are also a lot of composite deck materials that last much longer and require less regular care. While they don’t exactly look like wood, there are lots of pros to choosing a non-wood material.

  • Avoid wood rot
  • Lack of splinters
  • Less costly care over time
  • Longevity

These materials may cost a bit more up front, but they make up for it over time with less maintenance costs.

If you have wood rot and need to replace siding, shutters, or a deck, call Color Expressions Painting today! Don’t wait until the rot gets even worse.
